The Commonwealth of Virginia is undergoing a corridor study along the entire I-95 route from Washington, DC to the North Carolina line to create a plan to deal with the ever worsening traffic congestion. We’ve spent billions attempting to pave our way out of traffic just to end up with even more traffic.
Every workday, Amtrak and Virginia Railway Express remove more than 2 million passenger miles from our roadways. Imagine if passenger rail was funded at the same levels as our roadways. Even though passenger rail only receives four cents from every transportation dollar, it’s time for intercity rail, commuter rail, and transit to play a much larger role.
We are asking the Virginia Department of Transportation and the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation to make sure that enhanced passenger rail is a major part of any solution to solve the I-95 corridor traffic problem.
